Top 10 Things You Probably Never Knew About Your PS4
In the over two years since the PlayStation 4 was launched, a lot has changed. Whether that’s the host of new features, slight UI tweaks or the raft of games now available; the PS4 gets better and better but that doesn’t account for all the little-known tips, tricks and secrets already out there yet to become common knowledge. Even if you’ve been using the PS4 since launch day, chances are good that you don’t know about everything the console has to offer.

1. Make Your Headphones Wireless
A 3.5mm jack handily positioned on the DualShock 4 means you can plug your own headphones or headset into the controller. The default setting is for chat audio only but this can be easily tweaked by holding down the PS button in game and selecting ‘adjust devices’ from the resulting menu. Select the ‘output to headphones’ option and choose ‘all audio’.
Create a more immersive environment to fully enjoy your gaming sessions by removing the ambient noise and you can even use the mic from your headset for a game chat or even commentary recording.
2. Use Your Smartphone As A Keyboard
With an unreliable keyboard support, it was a serious problem to enter messages using the analogue sticks on PS3. Thankfully, the PS4 delivers a choice of interfaces and, as well as a helpful touchpad input, allows you to use the PlayStation App as a second screen for text entry.
With your phone and PS4 on the same Wi-Fi network, you can pair them via the PlayStation App connection settings on the PS4. Then, with both logged in to the same PSN ID, you can start typing via the app and remove all the hassle altogether.
3. Use Your Vita As An Extra DualShock
Buying an extra PS4 controller can be expensive, even in the sales, but if you’re a die-hard PlayStation fan and haven’t shelled out for an additional controller yet, Sony has got you covered with the ability of your trusty Vita to double up as an additional DualShock controller.
Set up remote play as usual with the Vita. This will automatically turn off any connected controller and allow the handheld to control the on-screen action. When you want a friend to join in, have them press the PS button on the DualShock and log in as another user or guest and you and your friend will be good to go.
4. Use Voice Commands
The traditional way to operate your console is to use buttons, but if you’re really feeling fancy then PS4 also responds to voice commands. Prefacing each statement with “PlayStation” you can tell the PS4 to take screenshots, play games (by saying the game name and then “start”), go back to the home screen, select applications and power off.
Many developers have started to use these voice commands feature to in their games such as Thief, which allows you to sneakily whistle to distract guards.
5. Quick-Switch Between Your Apps And Games
If you like to run multiple apps in a session, there’s a very easy way to switch between them with a PS4 by pressing a double tap of the PS button will quickly switch between the two most recent apps.
It’s not true multitasking as it can sometimes close the background app to save memory. This is truly beneficial if you are checking the trophies required for an elusive platinum you can switch easily between the game and the trophy application without having to go to the home screen and crawl along to the desired section or to switch to the IMDb website while watching a TV show or film.
You can also press the home button once mid-game, the game will be paused and you are free to browse to other settings without the game closing.
6. Prepare For Project Morpheus
Sony’s Oculus Rift-rivalling virtual reality headset has changed its name from the futuristic Project Morpheus to the simpler PlayStation VR and it’s coming in Q1 2016.
The headset has a 1080p OLED display, a 120hz refresh rate and 3D audio to fully get your head in the game. Plus, if you’ve still got your Move wands, you can use them as they were invented with VR in mind and built for tracking.
Sony has revealed that over 200 developers are currently working on VR projects and more than 50 titles are confirmed for launch. From horror coaster Until Dawn: Rush Of Blood to Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey, there’s going to be a lot to experience when we finally get our eyes on the potential future of gaming.
7. Download PS4 PS Plus Games Without A PS4
If you are going to be away from your console for a while, there is a way to get your free PS Plus PS4 games through the browser.
Head to the Sony Entertainment store website, logs in to your PSN account and head to the PS Plus section. You’ll then be able to virtually purchase PS4 games without access to an actual PS4 and play them at your own convenience
8. Keep Your Game Saves On A USB Stick
If PS Plus doesn’t sound like an attractive option now you’ve spent all that cash on a PS4, you can backup your save games to a USB drive pretty easily. It doesn’t require a subscription, just a USB stick.
To save your game files to a USB stick, plug the thing into your PS4 and go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Storage.
9. Stop Annoying Notifications
There’s nothing more annoying than settling in to watch a movie or have an intense gaming session on PS4 and have a constant stream of notifications bombarding you.
The PS4 is automatically set up to send you a message whenever one of you friends enters a party, which is quite a strange thing to know.
But, head to Settings > Notifications and you can uncheck any of the boxes for the notifications that annoy you the most – including that party notification.
10. Accessorize Accordingly
